Here is my plan: I am using my Kreg Jig to build a toy box with Pine and Oak. In most cases it will be connecting Oak to Oak or Pine to Pine, but in one or two cases, it will be Oak to Pine.

I know you want coarse threads for softwoods like Pine, but my question is:
Can I use Hi-Lo screws when screwing into Oak, or will that be too large of a risk of splitting the wood?  Coarse screws are for softwoods and fine screws are for hardwoods, but what are the Hi-Lo benefits?

(If you can't tell, I ordered Hi-Lo screws rather than fine-thread and am just curious about it...)

Hello Adam. The Hi-Lo screw from Kreg is designed for use with medium-hardness woods, such as poplar. Fine-thread screws are the preferred choice for hardwoods like cherry, maple, oak, etc. When working with pine, though, we recommend using coarse-thread screws, as they are designed for use with softwoods like cedar, pine, etc. If you have any further questions, please get in touch with the Kreg Customer Service Team. They will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding Kreg products and offer their best advice for your applications. The "Hi-Low" fastener is the minimal performance solution for fastening in low pressure environments,

such as plastic, particle board, masonite, and wood.

More material is trapped in between the threads which helps to resist pull-out, and allows for lower driving torque.

For satisfactory results, the threads need to have deep penetration into the base material for satisfactory holding power.

I wouldn't use a Hi-low screw for pocket hole joinery.
