Michael, You don't have to be a "Rookie" to make a mistake. Mistakes are the best teacher to us all as your experience with this will most likely alter the chances of making the same mistake again. There is an old saying that is very true and many times speaks to all of us. "If you don't learn from your mistakes, there's no sense making them."
You make a good remedy for the mistake by using the one inch screws. You could have changed the jig setting and clamped up the stock into the jig and carefully centered each hole and drilled them again. It would have been a tedious task but possible.
Something to remember, There is a reason for mistakes and it is the ability to see and understand them and then correct them that makes a good craftsman.
