Kreg Owners' Community

I am constructing a picnic table as one of my first few projects using Kreg pocket hole joinery.  I converted the original plans that call for a 5/16" carriage bolt (to attach the top leg brace to the legs) to pocket hole joints.  But I have a couple of questions and would like feedback on the project so far.

My primary question is regarding the strength of the joint.  Will the joint with three screws and glue hold someone sitting on the table (not the bench) as well as the 5/16" carriage bolts?

Do I need to use three screws?  Two from one direction and one from the opposite direction?

Is the blue screw resistive enough to weather conditions to last a number of years (10 or more)?

I think I will plug / fill the holes to help reduce corrosion.

See the attached PDF file which shows several pictures and explanations of the project so far.

All feedback is welcome.

Thanks

Bryan

Thats correct James the pocket screw is not designed to do a load bearing job. I no a person on here about yr ago wanted to build a bed using pocket screws to attach the rails and he did not take into consideration the stress and it did break loose. Stick with the plan and save yourself the trouble of repairing something new
Hi - I built a picnic table last spring and used half lap joints on the stress points. Pocket screws worked very nicely for attaching the top boards of the seats and table though. No nail/screw heads in the top and no chance of popping. I also used pocket screws to attach the bracing. No real stress on the braces, just need to have them held in place, the placement provides the strength.
I built one last summer also. No screws visible in top or top of the seats. Used carrage bolts.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention... I tied the half laps up with cap screws and t-nuts.

Hello everyone.. thanks for the replies.  I will go ahead and reinforce the table using the original cross brace and carriage bolts on this one. In addition I do plan to use pocket hole screws for attaching the table top boards and bench boards.
