Kreg Owners' Community

Hi;

My next project is building a divider-wall display cabinet.  I have an idea of what I would like, but sure would love to find plans that I could adapt to my scenerio.

The cabinet would be approximatly 13 inches or so wide and about 62 inches high and just over 77 inches long, with glass doors on one side and solid glass back (with middle divider).  This would sit on top of a book case which was built with the house and stands about 36 inches high.  I would also entertain the idea of starting from the floor and building all new.

I would love to use the kreg jig for the joints and would build it out of 3/4 inch birch ply, and solid 3/4 inch  birch for face, shelf frames etc.

I am a beginner but have some experience, and have many tools, including table saw, 12 inch planer and new 6 inch helical head jointer, to name a few.

Wow, that is gonna be one heavy *******. Just a quick check and the top, bottom and sides comes to almost 70 lbs given density of birch ply is about 700 kg/cu meter. Glass is 2000 to 8000 kg/cu meter.

Don't know how you'd set something like that on a 3 ft high bookcase but I sure wouldn't want to be in the same county if it fell off.

I'd suggest you rethink the plan for something more freestanding. I think it's an awesome project but implementation, as it stands, looks to me a bit problematic.

Thanks John, that is what I am looking for, ideas:)  I would like to take apart the bookcase, and start from scratch.  I am looking for some kind of plan, design and with the plan I can make it solid.  By the way, the bookcase is built very solid of heavy frame and 3/4 birch ply from the '60's.

Any ideas. plans are welcome

Well I have looked at a similar project in my own home.  The only safe way to have the structure is to make it permanent.  Either by securly bolting the bookcase to a wall (via studs and lag bolts) or post then the rest of your project to the bookcase.  Option to is building from the ground up with a frame and starting by using the wall as one side of the divider.  I have built 5 projects so far with the kreg jig.  One of them a large book case similar in height to what you say and yes it is heavy so I safety straped it to the wall once its location was determined.

P.S.

   Use google sketch up to plan your project makes figuring out joints easy and how to plan the pocket holes to keep them out of sight.
