I was wondering how I can make the simple work bench safe for outdoor use, ie what materials should I use?  I plan to follow the directions as is, but I wasnt sure what material I should substitute.  Thanks for any help, cant wait to get started with my new kreg jig.

you can use redwood, ceder.for looks or treated lumber for frame top i wood use merine grade plywood it aint cheap but will last awhile
Can treated lumber be stained or painted?
Yes but it needs to be at 18% moisture or less. maby this will helpSource: Treated Lumber Manual

It's recommended that 'wet' pressure treated wood be allowed to dry to typical
in-service moisture content (about 19%) prior to finishing. The time it takes
to achieve this moisture content depends on a variety of factors, such as time
in storage, storage method, size of lumber, and climate, but it's usually
several days to a couple weeks. Some finish manufacturers recommend that
treated wood remain unfinished for six months to a year. That's not a good idea
because the damaging effects of weather and moisture begin soon after use and
exposure.

Either paint or stain would be suitable. Paint provides the best protection
from moisture, but can peel over time and should not be used on wear surfaces
such as deck floors. Stain provides good protection, and G-P would suggest a
semi-transparent because it provides protection from both moisture and the sun.
To insure satisfactory product performance, it's important the user routinely
maintain exterior wood, and because the damaging effect of weather is
unavoidable, some surface roughening (such as checking and raised grain) can be
expected regardless of finish type used.

As a courtesy, I'm attaching an informative publication from Southern Pine
Council.

I would like to know how long you have to
wait before treated 5/4 deck boards can be painted? I have been told as
long as 1 year
is this true?
Other than cost why not use 5/4 plastic decking boards about $20 12 ft 2" x 6"
