Kreg Owners' Community

Okay so I'm doing the outdoor chair project found on the Kreg website. I've cut all the wood and drilled the pocket holes. I started the assembly of the seat portion and found that the screws are going all the way through the edge of the wood or so close to the edge that there is a depression left in the wood. The drill I use to drive the screws is a Ryobi 1plus cordless and the clutch is set on 1(the lowest setting). I'm considering scrapping the 1x3 seat supports for 2x4's so that the screws will be farther away from the edge. Has anyone else had this problem connecting 1x3's together?

Jon, from your pics. I can see that your screw,s are correct, the drill is set good , what are the setting,s on the jig drill guide and the drill bit collar set at , should be 3/4 " !!  I use a lot of 1" x 4" on my project,s and have not had any problem,s with the screws going through the board,s !  Hope this help,s , Jim 1

I have the jig and collar both set for 3/4". I'm kind of wondering if it the stock I bought might be to blame. Since posting this I decided to measure it, and even though it says it's 1x3, it's actually not 3/4 of an inch, it's about an 1/8" off. The 2x4's are precise(1 1/2x3 1/2). I got it at home depot, where I've always bought wood, and never come across this, next time I'll bring a tape measure with me. But as for this project I'm going to go up to the 2x4's for the added strength and support.

Hi jon ,how you doing ? Always test your pocket holes on a scrap piece first then if necessary re adjust ,saves a lot of grief ruining the project .Good luck with the chair love too see a pic when done ,mick.

I believe the instruction manual describes using a "nickel", as a spacer between the drill point and the jig base, when positioning the stop-collar.

I took a picture that shows what has happened. The screws are going into the 1x3 on the tops so close to edge that they are causing depressions on the sides.
