Kreg Owners' Community

morning folks. Im Scott and im new to the forum. I guess you can just call me a hobbyist but i really enjoy working with wood and building things.

I kind of ran in to a probelm with the kreg jig and i have not been able to find any topics on it on the internet.

Anyhow i was working on a project and i cut a 2x4 at opposing 45 degree bevel angles. I tried to figure how to make the pocket holes on the short side of the wood but when i drilled it through, it tore through the wood. Now I did just realize that i had the bit setup incorrectly. I used the "tip" for the reference point instead of the "step" when setting the depthy. IDK if that would cause the problem but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Heres a picture of what i was working on. As you can see,, the pocket holes are on top and visible. I wanted them underneath so that they would be out of sight.

Thanks.

Not really sure I haven't used my HD jig yet.  But I would think if you did them underneath where the 45 cut starts that would be your edge that you gauge the jig off and I think it would work.  Not exactly sure but looks like you have some scrap laying around to try it on.  If not maybe just plug the holes up.  Good luck and welcome!!!

Hi Scott, welcome to the community of woodworkers.  Drilling pocket holes in angles pieces has it problems both in drilling and also strength.  When I am faced with this problem I make my cut on only one side of the piece and then drill the pocket holes in the piece without any angle.  Then you can screw into the angled piece and then cut off he square piece at the 45 degree angle giving you the 45 degree angle without the problem of having to drill into a cut angle.

Refer to my page and go to "my discussions" and click on all discussions.  Type in "turning angles in cabinets" you will find a lengthy discussion and drawing of which I have done on the subject.  It is #33 PAGE 1 DATED Nov 28 2011.

This is the method I use when I build angled cabinets or other angled woodwork.  Enjoy your work and venture in this community.

thanks for the response and the warm welcome. I looked at the other post you recommended and i got the idea. The only thing im not sure about is how to make the pocket holes in the middle of the wood instead on the ends. From my thinking the way you described it, wont help me in my application because i am joining the 45 degree bevel cuts in the middle of another piece and not the end.
