Hi I'm new to the kreg community but have been using my kreg jig for about 5 years now. I use it mainly for faceframes, the back of book shelves, and panels when necessary. I'm starting to build a couple of rustic and heavy duty dining chairs. I was wondering if using the kreg jig for the aprons/stretchers of the chair is a good idea....i'm not sure if these joints will be strong enough. i'm teetering back and forth with a loose tenon and the kreg joint. any advice would be so welcomed!
thanks,
Fred

The Kreg Jig can definitely build strong chairs. I've attached stretchers, aprons, etc, over the years with great success. I'd advise using longer screws--depending on the thickness of the legs.
For example, if the aprons are 3/4" thick, set the jig and the drill stop collar for 3/4" so that you'll drill pockets centered on the stretchers and at the right length. Then attach the stretchers with a longer screw. You can use a 1 1/2" screw if the legs are 1 1/2". If they're bigger, jump up to a 2" or 2 1/2" screw. Definitely use at least two screws at each joint.
The same would apply to any lower rungs/stretchers. Set your jig and driver to the thickness of the rung/stretcher material, and then use a screw that's the appropriate length for the legs.
If you're building with really beefy materials, such as 2x stock for stretchers, you might even want to look at using our Kreg Jig HD: http://www.kregtool.com/Kreg-Jig-HD-Prodview.html.
Of course, David's advice about trying a prototype is good, too. You could build an entire chair, or put together some sample joints using the advice above and see what you think.
Good luck with the project. I'm sure everyone here on the Community would love to see photos when you are done.

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.
I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
