Let me get this straight

I am going to connect a 2x4 to a 4x4 peice of wood.

I set the step drill bit to 1 1/2. Correct?

I guess what I am asking is, it doesn't matter how big the wood I am conncting to is, It's the intial size of the wood I am drilling the holes in that I set the bit and jig to.

That is correct, you would set the drill bit for 1 1/2".  The only thing that would change is say if you were attaching a 2x to a 1x, you would use a shorter screw, but still use the 1 1/2" setup for the drill bit.

I will attaching the 2x4s to inside of the the 4x4, will this be a problem?

Not exactly, I now live in Greensburg, LA which is near Kentwood, LA. Originally From New Orleans area (West Bank Jefferson Parish). Moved here 3 years ago after retirement.
