It is time for me to replace my Lazy Susan.  Mine is the Pac Man shaped one.  What I am going to do is put a stationary shelf on a cleat. Then build two pie shaped selves and put them on glides.

My question is has anyone built a shelf like this before?  I have never bent any wood before.

Robert, I wish I could help you on that one, but I am extremely curious of what you come up with.  The corner cabinet has a ton of wasted space in it for sure. I do know that you can build a steam box out of 6 inch pvc, but make sure you have a place for the steam to exhaust on the end with a cap and the other end just use a screw on cleanout, use straight grained lumber and an inexpensive wallpaper steamer.

Hello Robert, being a cabinet maker I have had occassions to convert blind cabinets and lazy susan cabinets into those that  house a lazy susan using pie cut and or full circle rotating shelves.  It will depend on how the cabinet is configured as to how I go about it.  If it is a current lazy susan cabinet with either a full circle or a pie cut susan in I would cut the shape of the susan shelf out of 3/4" furniture or cabinet grade plywood.  Install the mid stationary shelf and using lazy susan plate bearing attach them.  The are available at many suppliers of which one is Rocklers (picture enclosed).  I suggest using the large bearing plate as they resist the shelf from rocking and or binding. To make the rotating shelf rim I simply use 1/4" thick by 3" wide strips of a good bendable lumber such as Oak or hickory steam it and bend it around the shelf and attach with glue and brad nails.  Sand out the upper edge to a nice smooth round over to protect the hand and arms when placing and removing items from the shelf.  Attach the rotating shelf to the floor and the second one to the fixed shelf.

To convert a blind cabinet I use the same methods with the exception of installing a set of full extention drawer glides to a support shelf that allows it to pull out into the open area of the blind cabinet.  Install the rotating shelves on each of the support shelves.  In this case I only cut the rotating shelf into a full circle and not into a pie shape.  In most occasions in converting a blind cabinet my favorite conversion is to use a drawer. I build  a drawer that pulls out into the open area of the cabinet and they are mounted as above only use a drawer instead of a sliding support shelf.

Justin has described a method of making a steam box that will help you bend the rims.  Due to the diameter of the shelf, It will not require alot of force to bend the wood around the shape.  There is also some materials available in some cabinet supply outlets to make the rim out of items such as hard rubber and or plastics.

Need more help feel free to inquire,

Robert,

Listen to Jay!!  He is my go-to guy for all of my cabinet "issues" for sure!!!

Poor Susan, always getting a bad rap.  Everyone thinks she's lazy, and has a black eye.

Jay

I got the bending the wood.  But what do I do with the two straight edges?

Add in a straight piece making the connection at the corner or the curved piece.   Run the curved portion of the wood so that it will overlay the straight piece.  Otherwise best to add the straight piece and then add the curved section running them long and cut back flush at the intersection.
