Kreg Owners' Community

I am totally new to this sort of thing and two weeks ago didn't even know what a pocket scew was. And I'm pretty dense about woodworking, too.

I now have a Kregjr, but am having trouble following and/or understanding the instructions about the jig setup. The booklet that came with the jig says "set your jig to match the thickness of your workpiece."

I want to attach a 2x4 to a 4x4, but if I try to set the jig for two inches (thickness of workpiece?) there are no markings for this dimension. In making some test drills I set the dill for 3/4 of an inch, and it seemed to work pretty well -- drilling to within about 3/16 of an inch from the end of the 2x4 -- but I don't know why it worked.

An old guy trying to learn a new skill would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Roy,

The material that you are working with (2X4) will actually be 1 1/2" thick. If you set your jig and depth collar for the 1 1/2" setting and use a 2 1/2" screw you should get an extremely strong joint. If you have any other questiosn please let us know.
There is a forum on this disscusion already, your not alone here on this one. When working with two different thickness of material, you wnt to set everthing up for the screw lenght for the thinner piece. For example when joining 2x4 to 3/4 in. material set the jig for 3/4in. and use 1-1/4in. screws.
