This is how new I am at this:  I was gifted a new Kreg HD kit by my wife on my birthday. Here's my rookie question:  Are there special HD size screws that have to be used with the HD or are the regular coarse or fine thread screws OK to use?

I just was doing some research on this site and saw two separate posts(or answers to posts?) that said basically that getting special HD screws for use with the HD is near to impossible. Can anyone comment on this?

Jan , the HD dose take a # 14 x 2 1/2 " screw , you can get them on Kreg site  SML- cx250-125  , they are #19.99 a box also think you can get them on Amazon , hope this helps , JIM !!

Hi Jan.  Like James said, we recommend using Kreg Jig HD pocket-hole screws: https://www.kregtool.com/store/c20/kreg-jigreg-screws/, which are optimized for use with the Kreg Jig HD and 1-1/2" and larger stock.  These large 2-1/2"-long #14 hardened-steel screws provide incredible shear-resistance and have a Protec-Kote finish with three anti-corrosion layers for long-term moisture resistance.

They are available in a 125-count or 30-count package on our website, Amazon.com, or at your local Kreg Dealer.  To find a Kreg Dealer near you, use the Kreg Dealer Locator on our website: https://www.kregtool.com/find-a-dealer/default.aspx.  Simply enter your zip code to see a list of dealers in your area.  If you are unable to buy locally, Amazon or buying direct from us will be your best bet, but keep in mind that when buying online, shipping charges may apply.

Thanks KregRep,  Then this is my question now.  For educational purposes, what is the difference  then between the Kreg Blue Coated screws and the HD beige coated ones?  Are not the Blue Coated screws made for use on outdoor projects?  Now I have learned enough to know that the HD screws are larger and made specifically for use with the HD but then what is the main use with the blue coated ones? Thank you.

From Kreg's website:

Blue-Kote™ Screws feature three anti-corrosion layers, making them the perfect choice for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor projects. Blue-Kote™ Screws provide rust-resistance up to 400% greater than zinc-plated screws and work with pressure-treated material.

Blue-Kote™ Screws are for use with the standard size Kreg jig. The beige Kreg Jig® HD Pocket-Hole Screws are specifically designed for use with the JD Pocket-Hole jig - much thicker. Both have 3 anti-corrosion layers for moisture resistance.

Found Kreg HD screws at Menards.

They have a large selection of Kreg products.
