i am going to be joining a piece of plywood to a hardwood board  should i be using fine thread screws since i am drilling into hardwood?

If I understand correctly the answer would be yes. The threads are going into the hardwood and the pockets are going into the plywood,

Yes, the material receiving the screw threads would dictate which screw to use.

Yes but 2 small tips I will offer you; make sure your drill collar is backed off the 3/4" marking just a hair, maybe 1/16". Your plywood is not a true 3/4" as your hardwood is. This will help keep the point your SML-F125 from breaching the surface of the hardwood. Another thing is make sure you have clamp pressure at the screw whenever joining (mostly at the ends) to prevent splitting. I learned that one the hard (expensive) way.
