Ron,

You may wish to replicate the joint from some scrap pieces and try that way.

If there is a concern a trial run  it will reveal all without adverse effects on the final product.

From the work I have done with chairs, I also noticed there was a definate lack of glue on the joints.

Its as if the manufacturer built them for show only.

Upon them being effectively loaded and moved about they "fall apart"

  I use a lot of pocket screws but they aren't always the solution to a problem. From what you describe, this is a situation where I would use epoxy and a piece of threaded rod. Cut the rod to fit and then anchor it in one side, being sure the projecting part will fit into the other side.

  Let the epoxy set and then orient the repair so that the open hole is down and do the same thing. This often requires some creative clamping and attention to making sure the orientation of the leg is correct.

  Stay ready with a rag saturated with paint thinner to catch any epoxy leaking out.

I have some further thoughts on Ron's problem and I am going to try to attach a photo of what I think was a similar problem that found its was to me.

The joint described sounds like a bad design so the repair has to be stronger than the original. The epoxy/threaded rod thing I describes accomplishes that but reattaching the block will add more strength.

The pocket hole screws are great for this even though it isn't pocket hole joinery. In some woods, no predrilling is required and there is no danger of splitting the wood.

This is a problem that came to me.

I don't know how special it is but the second block at the top of the <reply> screen is what you activate to attach an image.

Hi Everyone, My name is George Bethoney and I live in Franklin, MA , located about 30 mi. SW of Boston. I have been woodworking since high school almost 40 years. I had a small cabinet shop/furniture business but could get enough work to keep it running. Now I just do home projects and do work for people here and there. I have been fortunate enough to build a 400sf shop to do my projects. I discovered Pocket hole joinery a few years ago and absolutely love it. I have just about retired by biscuit joiner. I hope to see so new ideas on how to use this tool and maybe some interesting projects to build.

Hello, My name is Albert I live in west Carpentersville IL . I am new at this i just desided to do some wood working so I went out and got some new power saws. So i seen the Kreg jig on Youtube and went out and got it the Master sys and the Kreg R3.

I am going to start to build some shelfing and a nice work bench in the basement and other things and this well be a nice way to pass time.
