Hello all and happy New Year!

I have been asked to make a built in book case shelving unit and it is the first time that someone wants to pay me for the work. I have yet to talk about specifinc design details and such as Christmas was a busy time for everyone. I am not sure how to decide how much to charge for such a service.

I am not the fastest in the shop and I do not intend to rush it, it is after all a hobby. So I do not think charging by the hour makes sense. Could I use a cost + % model? Like cost of materials + 10%?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

How I charge is materials plus $100 - $200. The price is high enough so that every uncle and aunt wont ask for free cabinetry. But it is low enough to absorb any minor mistake or correction you make. Also I barter. A tool to me is better than money.

I was thinking of a tool as well. At least that is what would want to do with the money. A jointer would make a fine addition to the shop alright...
