flushing pocket plugs

what is the best method for flushing off pocket plugs without damaging the veneer ?

I have heard that a lot of people use a flush cutting saw. It is flexible and after the cut you sand down the little bit that is left.

I have tried sanding them down, using a flush cut japenese saw, using a router with a straight bit set so it only hits the plug, but the easiest way I found to make the plugs fit flush was to shorten the plug on the flat side by about an 1/8 of an inch on a sander or cutting it off on the bandsaw either way I grab the plug with a pair of vice grips to keep my hands clear. There are a couple of examples of plugs cut this way on my page.

 I usually take masking tape and apply it around the plug and use a razor knife or sharp wood chisel to cut the plug flush.  The tape will protect the veneer .  Another method is to cut the plug shorter that the hole debth and finish sand the top , add some glue and carefull drive them flush using a rubber head or plastic hammer.

I use a multipurpose cutting tool with flush cut attachment (An oscillating tool). Then just one pass with my sander an d it's perfect
