Hi ray a friend of mine used gutter stock for his window boxes its alread painted and will last along time.You might get 3 window boxs for the price of one trex board.
thses was made of plywood and they lasted 2 years.

Here is example how to keep wood boxes from rotting out.I put plastic liners in them so all you do is build 4 walls and set the liner on top of rim
The all ceder one was built last summer and what the owners are doing there is using 6 inch plant pots and setting them on bottom of planter and putting mulch around them
thanks for your ideas, after all these ideas I've been getting I think I'm going to go with a solid wood boxes with plastic boxes inside of them. I'm thinking about maybe making them with some sort of a raised panel in the front. I'll post pictures as I make them
