Face Frame for wall cabinet / Good way to stain Birch??

For my first project, I made the garage wall cabinet from the project plan that came with the jig, but I made a few changes hoping to use it in the house.

1. I upgraded to Birch plywood

2.  I decresed the dimensions to 6'' wide instead of 12''

3. I installed 3 fixed shelves instead of 1 fixed with an adjustable shelf.

To finish this correctly, I am thinking of adding a face frame to give it a better look for inside the house.  Do you think a 3/4'' x 2'' dimension for the wood will suffice?

Also, any suggestions on a good way to stain or finish the cabinet?  I am leadning towards a danish oil that has a walnut colored varnish.  I heard that Birch can be tricky....

Thanks for any help you can provide!
