What is the best method to cut a return end on a moulding run?

Philip,

I see it's been over a month and you've gotten no responses. So here's my method.

1. At the end of the run cut the piece on a outside 45, meaning the short side is on the wall, the long side will be where you want the end of the run.
2. I would install/nail it up to within 2 feet of the run and leave it un-nailed for now.
3. Looking at the run if you've stopped the run on the left end of the board, take another piece of molding and cut a outside 45 on the right end of the board (i.e. the opposite of the installed piece)
4. Now, turn your angle to 90 and cut the piece off right where the 45 begins on the short side.
5. Then test fit it, if you're satisfied dab some wood glue on it and put it in place and nail it with a pin nailer preferably as to not split the small piece.
6. Then finish nailing the end of the run.

That's all there is too it.

Hope this helps.

Robert
Robert, thanks for your help. I'm almost done with my moulding project and had thought about the return end. I was thinking of it as basically a 45 degree outside corner, and I believe that is what you've described.
