Excellent. I've completed the cabinet that was a challenge but I'm keeping this latest information for future use.
Many thanks.
though it looks like a slightly better solution would be:

The half inch hole slid off the edge of the board by 1/8"
The normal 1/2" drill bit setting
Use a 1" screw
Of course, you could figure out this by trial and error on scrap wood too, but this way should get you there a bit quicker and less messy!
Best I can see playing around with the joint in sketchup is:

The hole should be drilled using the drill block at the 1/2" setting as it lets the screw leave the wood at a good thickness.

There isn't much thread left though with a 1" screw.
Instead use a 1 1/4" screw, this barely pokes through.
So if you set your drill bit back 1/8" or so from the 1/2" mark, you should have enough meat to get some grab on the wood. (worth a shot on some test wood)…

Not really. That would work with *solid* wood but I'm using plywood. If you'll notice in the video, there's an overlap at the joint.
The overlap can be cut off and the joint sanded smooth and it should look just fine *with solid wood*. But with plywood the plies would show.
But thanks for the reference.
