I tried step 1, it will clamp something that is 1inch thick just not around 2inch. Regarding point 2, even after I first loosened the screw at bottom, hard to tighten or loosen again without pliers*. Wondering if the threads on screw are faulty.

When that happens I try to clamp a different size (even just down to the work surface) then go back to the actual work piece. Usually that clears up the little hiccup that the clamp has had. Of course, adjusting the clamping pressure should be done as well - doesn't always take much, just a little turn seems to make a big difference.</p>
