Kreg Owners' Community

Hi All,

I need some 2x2 pine stock and all I can find at rough furring strips.  I've found 2x2 in oak and walnut, but I am on a pine budget and have no access to a planner.  I've checked the big box stores, no luck.  I've also checked my local Woodcraft and it would be cheaper for me to use oak and walnut!

Any ideas?

The home centers often have 2x2 stock in poplar. It's much better quality than any furring strip, and usually a lot less expensive than select pine. Poplar is a hardwood and it's easy to work with. It also takes paint really well and can be stained to mimic other woods like cherry and walnut. You might want to see whether they have it available.

Thanks for the heads up KregRep!

If it was me I would use oak if you got kids they are hard on pine .

You could try gluing up 2 pcs. of 1''x2'' pine
