I am looking for some guidance here. I have a few challenges that I am trying to over come. Normally building a workbench wouldn't be a crisis, but I am drawing a blank right now. I have searched the internet for plans hoping to find something that fits what I am trying to do. Nothing has popped up thus far.

1. I have a shop with 1 access door which is basic 3 foot door.

2. I want to build a bench that is 4x8.

3. I have 4 standard 4 drawer base cabinets that I was given that I want to use. They are brand new and I figured..... why not.

4. I want to make the base of the bench in 2ft wide sections that can be taken apart. Each section will be on casters so that I can move them independently should i ever have to take the table out of the shop.

5. Since i only have 4 cabinets, there will be a lot of "dead" space that i can use for different things. I am looking for any suggestions or ideas that I might could incorporate into this project.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Pictures of what you have or are talking about would be of greater appreciation. I am not a pro, not a newbie, but I know just enough to be dangerous with my plans and ideas.
Introducing the All-New Kreg Universal Bench!tag:kregjig.ning.com,2012-12-05:2900167:Topic:5011562012-12-05T17:07:45.909ZKregRephttps://kregjig.ning.com/profile/KregRep

Any Space. Any Task. Any Size.

The all-new Kreg Universal Bench system reinvents the workbench by making it easy for you to create a custom heavy-duty workbench, assembly table, tool stand, or outfeed table in a size that you choose to fit your space, your projects, and your needs.

That’s because the Universal Bench isn’t just another workbench. It’s a system of rails and adjustable-height legs, both made from thick, durable steel, that are available in multiple sizes. By combining legs and rails, you can create a bench in 15 possible square or rectangular sizes—from 14"x14" up to 64"x64"—and two different heights.

YOU choose the bench height!

Sturdy 12-gauge steel legs in two sizes (29"- 35" Tall & 15¼"- 21¼" Tall) offer 6" of unlimited height adjustability, so you choose the exact bench height you want.

YOU choose the width and depth!

Steel rails in 5 lengths let you create a bench in one of 15 possible sizes to fit your space and your projects!

YOU make your bench your own!

To complete your Universal Bench, add a bench top made from the material you choose using predrilled mounting holes. Extra holes allow you to mount a shelf, storage, and other accessories to further customize your bench.

Kreg Universal Bench system Features:

2 Sizes of Adjustable-Height Legs:

29"-35" Tall

15¼"-21¼" Tall

Made from 12-gauge (1/8"-thick) steel

Both sizes feature 6” of height adjustment with no stops or presets, letting you set the exact height you need

Built-In leg levelers accommodate uneven or sloping floors

Predrilled mounting holes for rails, other accessories

Accept optional 3” dual-locking casters for easy mobility

5 Rail lengths:

Rails are available in 14", 20", 28", 44", & 64" lengths

Rails combine to make 15 bench sizes (14"x14" to 64"x64")

Made from 14-gauge steel

Predrilled holes for mounting bench top and shelves

Other Features:

Premium finish in Kreg Blue looks great and lasts

High-quality hardware included for simple, solid assembly

Supports up to 600 pounds

Bench top can be made from your choice of materials—not included with bench

My original idea was to build a cabinet for all my tools. Basically, a floor to ceiling cabinet. Plus, I would build a workbench. Probably the official Kreg workbench. Something small and versatile. Upon reflection of maximizing my workshop I came up with the idea to make rolling modular workbench/cubes/shelves.

I figured the cubes could double as my workbench and provide me much needed shelf space. Additionally, if I make about 4 of them I would gain a ton of flexibility. My idea is to be able to somehow make them attach or clamp to one another back-to-back. This way I can scatter them around when I don’t need a bench and bring them together in a variety of configurations when I need them. They could also double as out-feed surfaces for sawing too.

Attached is my very crud design to give you an idea of my idea. I’m thinking that the work surface needs to be about 2’x2’. That way they’re easy to stow and a few of them joined end-to-end or back-to-back or both would give me a ton of work surface and still retain the ability to get to the tools inside.

Is this a good idea? I’m looking for any kind of input to make sure I get it figured out before building it. Any considerations to be made? I’m specifically hoping someone will have an idea of how to attach them when I want to amass a workbench.

As my first Kreg project I am building the workbench as per the project plan page.
I am getting ready to build the Kreg workbench that they have plans for. Could anyone tell me why they say use two different screw lengths? The material is all the same thickness so I assumed you would use the same screws.

Thanks. This is my first project with the Kreg Jig.

It works great for most of my mechanical needs but doesn't provide a good flat surface for my woodworking projects. I am going to build a frame to hold a 8ft long 3ft deep working surface but don't know what my best and economical solution is. All I want is something durable and as close to perfectly flat as possible. I've investigated butcher block tops and tossed around the idea of hardwood plywood tops but want to do it right the first time without crying when I drop the cash for it.
