My quick change bit is no longer quick change! It won't release the drill bit. The release collar slides back and forth but I can't get the bit out, no matter what I try. Any suggestions?

Frank,

What's the make and model number of the tool you make reference to?

Frank,

Does the spring loaded collar close on it's own, or do you have to slide it forward to lock?

1.  If the spring return does not function---

a. the spring could be broken,

b. lube the mechanism, so it moves freely

2.  Obtain a plier tool---

grip the drill bit shank---

slide the quick-change lock to the open position---

pull out the drill bit.

If it's stuck, just give it a yank.

3.  Check for any signs of damage to the drill bit shank---burrs, or the like.

File the burrs off.

4. Spray some dri-lube into the chuck and it's slide mechanism.

Thank you Ken. The spring loaded collar is now immovable. I've sprayed lube and even put the bit in a vise and applying as much force as possible on the collar, but it won't move either way. Of course I can continue to use it as a "no-quick-change" chuck. Or I guess I can buy a new one.

Frank,

Perhaps the "ball" joint, or the like, that is intergral--- an internal component in the quick-change tool, is locked/frozen.

Perhaps metal chips/shavings got wedged in there---it'll only take a minute metal partical to get wedged in, and make it lock up.  (Akin to a ball joint in padlock).

Spray some penetrating lube down into the crevice---allow to soak in---tap with a hammer around the perimeter of the sliding mechanism---

it should loosen.

Metal particals may have come dislodged from the machined shank on the bit.

This is not an uncommon occurance with such type mechanisms.

(I've serviced several of them of the years).

I've had similar situations, and with corrective actions, I've described above, I was able to get them to function.

Sometimes when the integral ball doesn't function freely---after cleaning and lubing, it functions.

These type of mechanisms should be lubed to function smoothly.  Just spray some lube into the crevises.

I've had this happen many times on similar mechanisms---especially when they've not been used for a long time---rust developed.

One penetrating lubricant I find the best on todays market, is a product called "GIBBS".

It's an amazing product.  I use it to loosen frozen bolts and nuts on outdoor and heavy duty machinery equipment.
