Kreg Owners' Community

Hello my name is Frank & I have a question. I currently have a project going on where I want to build a shelf for my jack stands in my garage. I want to put a frame around the shelf so the jack stands won't accidentally fall off or anything. I'm using 1x3 board & I want to cut the corners at a 45° angle & put a couple of pocket holes on each corner facing the shelf as shown in the pic. I already know that I have to set the depth collar to 3/4" but what setting do I adjust my Kreg Jig to be able to join the mitered corners from the inside to hide my pocket holes? Any advice or opinions will be greatly appreciated & thank you in advance & have a great day!

Frank,

As shown in your illustration, the screw points will be too close to the outside corners, in a miter joint.

I'd suggest locating the pocket holes on the outside surface, so the screw points are "inward", from the outside corners, or use "butt" joints.

If your planned shelf extends out more than 12", I'd suggest adding supporting members on the underside, to prevent the outside edge of the shelf from sagging under load.

Thank you for your suggestions, Ken.

Unfortunately, this is one of the few applications that pocket holes cannot be used for. When you cut your pieces at 45 degrees, you remove too much wood to have room for the screw. Sorry for the inconvenience.

What if you put a block inside each corner, and the used the pocket screws from the block to the mitered part.  Might not be very strong, though. Especially for jack stands.

If it has to be pretty, consider a spline.

If it was mine, I'd use a conventional pocket hole approach and be done in minutes.
