Kreg Owners' Community

Hello Everyone,

I'm pretty new to this wood working stuff and am becoming frustrated with searching for sources of nice hard wood to work with.  I live in Gig Harbor Washington and would love to find a couple of sources for nice Oak, Cherry, and Walnut to build cabinets and furniture with.  If anyone has any input that exclude the large home improvement stores, I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Jake

Jake,

I'd start with a Google Search,

in your area,

for the materials you're looking seeking.

Try searching for a sawmill in your area. Earlier this year I discovered an urban sawmill in the Cleveland area.

Well Jake what about cabinet shops they sale there srap wood for a lot lass then the big store's and it is good for makeing furniture not so good for cabenits becuse the wood is off color but it works for me good luck.

try www.woodfinder.com and enter your zipcode

Hi Jake, I see that you live in Gig Harbor, Washington.  I live in Salem, Oregon.  I have been building cabinets and furniture as a  profession for over 20 years and one of the sources for dependable lumber that I have used is:  Woodcrafters.    There is a woodcrafters store  located in your area, in Seattle.   If you are in the market for a  quanity of most of the woods available of which includes what you have listed I would try them.  The prices are competative and the merchadise is exceptional.

I have made purchases from as much as a 1000 bf feet to as little as 50 bf and found that the lumber to be of good quality with nice grain and color match.  They also carry a nice selection of sheet goods as well.  If you do not wish to build your own moldings they have a nice selection of different molding they can usually supply what you need from simple to complex moldings.

In the Pacific Northwest area if you need exotic hardwood for inlay or accent pieces there is a hardwood outlet in Klamath Falls Oregon of which supplys exotic woods from all over the world.  They have a nice online catalogue showing most of the woods of the world and offer shipping services.  I often use the catalogue just to assist customers in picking a wood for a special product or inlay woods.   It is also just a nice catalogue to view.

Thanks for the feedback.  I had already performed 'Google' searches but the input to seach for Sawmill helped located a mill down the street from my house that I didn't know about.

Jay, you came through once again.  I sure appreciate the amount of time that you put in to helping other folks on this site.  Thank you!

FYI -- I think Woodcrafters has only one location.  Woodcraft, however, has many stores throughout the US.

Unfortunately neither is near me.

Woodcrafters is unique to the Pacific Northwest with multiple stores in the state of Washington and Oregon.  They are not associated with woodcraft and deal strickly with supplying lumber to the professional building trades.  The suggested location I pointed out is connected with the same business as the one I use here in Oregon.

I looked online for a Woodcrafters store close to me and it seemed like they had only the one location in Oregon.

My bad.

Hi Jake,

You can buy great hardwood at Edensaw in Tacoma.  Last year I needed some hickory boards to finish out my kitchen.  I found them and bought 5/4 Hickory, kiln dried, for $2.69 a bd ft with lots of color and grain.  They carry all domestic hardwoods.

Hope this helps.

Jack
