I got some MDF from Home Depot today and it's fuzzy, so I asked the lumber guy and he said that it was the top sheet to protect the rest.

My question is this; can you sand MDF to make it smooth? Or do you need to cut it down somehow?

This will be the first piece that I have worked with, but I couldn't pass up 5 half sheets of MDF at $.51 each.

You dont sand MDF it  is just paper and glue I would return if both sides are showing
Sounds like template material to me
I bought a half sheet of 3/4" for $.51, I will find a use for it.

I agree with that, 50 cents is cheaper than scrap. I use 3/4 MDF quite a bit for making exact fit dado's with pattern bits. Works pretty good If you only have a couple of dados to do. Any more than that a jig works better.

I also use it for jigs.

If you are going to put a finish on it you will just have to use a couple more coats to get the "fuzzies" out. Use a sanding sealer for fast drying and easy, no-clog sanding. Then you can paint or varnish and it will be as smooth as glass!

I am jealous! Wish I could find MDF for $1.02 a sheet!
