I have not converted a bed to a bench, but do have plans to build a garden bench in the near future. The plans I have (downloaded from the internet) call for a seat height of 16" from the ground (floor) and an arm rest height of 24".
I will be drafting my own plans, I just plan to use these for reference. If you're interested, I've attached the plans I downloaded, and a picture of what my sister-in-law is wanting (bench, with table in the middle).

Thanks Don gives me a good starting point. I would like any advice from some that have experince in the repurpsing for park bench.
