I am going to throw another question out there, being I am surrounded by tons of amazing experience and knowledge.

What are your thoughts on using the dial/digital indicators for trueing up saw blades, drill presses, etc.?

I use dial indicators and calipers---they're very helpful when striving for precision and accuracy.

In my case....really close would be nice.  :)

I'm with Ken, dial indicators and calipers work great.  I don't have a dial indicator to use in the wood shop, but I do have calipers, and use them frequently.  I use a dial (and digital) indicator at work to measure many mechanical items for height, run out, etc.

There are other means for truing blades, guides, etc. without using the indicator.  Although they may not be as accurate or precise, are adequate for working with wood.

With the indicator, you will have to devise a method to fixture it to however it will be used.  For truing a blade, you will have to devise (or purchase) something that will run in the miter slot.  For drill press run out, a way to hold it to measure the spindle.

In addition to dial calipers and dial indicators,

I find an adjustable digital t-bevel gauge and a digital angle protractor, are very useful.

This handy device works for me.

It holds the calipers and fits nicely in a 3/4"x 3/8" miter slot.

Also, the magnetic caliper base.

The caliper frame fits into and locks in the slot.

This style includes a dial indicator

Kreg Tools precision setup bars are a necessity in my shop,

as well the precision brass setup bars

The brass bars can be banked or stacked for additional measurements.

Stephanie,

The object you show allows using a standard caliper as a "DEPTH" gauge.

Which is what I want?  Correct?  To use it in my miter slot to be able to determine how true the saw blade is?

I like this tool for making depth measurements.

Does it fit into a miter slot?

Stephanie,

You'll need a device so that it registers in the left-side miter slot, when checking/adjusting the saw blade to be parallel to the miter slot.

I'm not sure if the base of the tool is wide enough to engage in the miter slot, and still allow the caliper body to rest on the saw table surface, so as to get make an accurate reading.

Peruse the first photo, I posted above.

This gadget is pretty simple, effective and inexpensive.

I obtained mine from Rockler---I believe they still offer it.
