Kreg Owners' Community

Hello All!  I recently bought the new Kreg Jig K5 at the suggestion of a finish carpenter for installing trim in my cabin. We want to add a sill to the bottom of the window frame that is 1-1/4 inches wide (and 3/4-inches thick). I have yet to see any information as to how wide a board has to be to drill a pocket, only the depth. Does anyone know of a way to make this work on a board this narrow, or am I out of luck? I just want to make sure the extension jam is as tight as can be.  Thanks!

Hi. Thanks for posting. Information about pocket placement in different widths is contained in your K5 Owner's Manual. I've clipped that page as an image below. You can absolutely put pockets in your 1-3/4" piece. You can get two side by side using the B and C holes in the drill guide. Those two holes are spaced 9/16" center-to-center.

I hope this helps. Welcome to the Kreg family. We're sure you'll really enjoy the K5!

One screw would not be a problem just put it in the center. You can move the board  once its in the jig.  Just do a few tests on a piece of scrap before using the window wood

Hi Zint. I build a lot of beaded face frames and I make them 1 &5/16" and have no problems with the face frames holding.  I just bore one hole as close to the edge and move the stock over and bore the second hole again as close to the edge as practical.   I have never had any problems and face frames need to be pretty strong to hold.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I'll have to do some practicing..

Zint,

The far end, where the drill bit enters to make the pocket hole, is about 2-1/8" from the end of the work piece.

I'd suggest make a sample test piece, so that you can see if what you want to accomplish, will meet your needs.

Hi Zint. Sorry if I misinterpreted your question. Ken is right that, when set for 3/4" stock, the back (shallow end) of the pocket is about 2-1/8" from the edge/end. This, though, doesn't mean that's the minimum width if you're putting the pocket across the width of the board. I join 1-1/2" wide pieces this way all the time. The pocket will extend into the opposite edge, but if that can be hidden, you wont see the small arc in the edge. If it will be seen, one option is to fill the hole with one of our Kreg Jig® Plugs. They're available in multiple wood species, and in paint-grade.

As mentioned by others, take a little time to experiment in some scrap stock, and you'll quickly be able to see how this all factors into your projects.

Hmmm, I noticed this post and since I'm kinda doing the same thing but on a window frame that the kids broke well not completely but kinda cracked although it is still kinda together, just has a crack and any further weight on it will probably crack it off.  I hope that's clear.  Anyway, I thought the poster was talking about having - lets say a 3' window and is tacking on that 1 1/4 X 3/4 board to the window frame.

If I'm correct he'd need to place holes every 6" or so into piece he's attaching to the window sill wouldn't he.  If

I'm all wet please excuse me.  Sometimes I don't understand or understand wrong. :-)

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
