Made this from 5/4 yellow pine , used a small propane torch to get the burnt look , used an old metal star for the pattern and bought the dowels , all of the wood was 5/4 planed down to 1 " , Did add four coats of poly to make the grain pop out !! The burnt look is popular here in PA. , but I think the poly makes a difference , a one of a kind build !!

Great looking stand, The burnt wood finish is very effective especially when it is done on a course grain timber like what you have used. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Hi Mick , thanks for the nice comment on my stand , you know me like to be different, one of a kind , even if I did make another one it would be one of a kind , as the grain on all boards are different , JIM !!

Hi Jay , thanks for the nice comments on my stand , was a bit of a job to get all the parts cut to fit around the star and to get the grain to run just right , did have a few mistakes till I got it just right , just have to keep trying , HA!!  And when using the torch , just have to take your time  till you have it just right and if it gets a little dark you can hand sand it  , to get the effect you want !!  And I think the poly really brings out the grain !!  Love my stars and stripes , am a veteran , have a great day , JIM !!

Hi Rita , thanks for the nice comments on my stand , the sun burst is a knot , but thanks for the notice and agree with you ,  the star pattern  is an old metal star that was hanging on the porch , and the other parts I cut from small boards to run the other way to get the effect!!  No plans for this one , just started to cut  out parts and see what I came up with, do see a lot of projects around here with the burnt look , but  never seen any one use the poly , think it makes the grain stand out better, like to be different , HA!!  Have a good day , JIM !!

Beautiful piece JIm!  Love the star as the focal point in the middle and off to the left side it has a appearance of a sunburst.  Not sure if that was intentional but it lends to the effect perfectly.   Love the finish and overall design.   Thanks for sharing and the inspiration!

Hi Jim, This is definitely one of which I have yet to see anywhere and it something that is definitely an eye catching appeal.  It shows off all of the grains in the wood and I noticed that you have been very careful in how you pose the grains in the build.  grains are evenly selected through out the piece and the use of a torch to burn the wood is also a nice approach.  The burning of the wood is evenly done and something not easily done as the control of a flame on a soft wood is simply not something where you hold a hot flame over wood and move it around.  Also of great interest is the star that you have put in the center of the top that is the focus point of the build.  That star is patriotic and says, "I am American".  That to me makes it a first class project.  The Poly finish was a great choice for a finish.  Thanks for posting your work.
