Second step is to cut to final width of 3 & 1/2".
I use a thickness planer to get accurate width and defect free square sides.

Hi James,  I have a choice of which to use and due to the accuracy and surface cuts that I get with the thickness planner, it is much easier to maintain an accurate surface and cut.  These pieces were about 9 feet in length and on a jointer is much more difficult to maintain a constant cut without a burn or a snipe in the surface.  Holding a 9 foot long board and getting an accurate cut on the surface as during the cutting on a jointer you have to stop and get a different hand placement on the board and this can lead to burning and or a snipe in the cut.

The thickness planner is so easy as it cuts with a pressure bar that keeps the stock in a steady and  maintained and an even pressure down on the stock.   Since the speed rate is constant and the stock held in an even pressure the cutters cut the stock smooth and accurate.  It is much faster and as the stock exits the surface planner you to gently lift up on the board as it exits and clears the pressure board thus gets rid of any planner snipe on the ends.   What you are seeing in this photo is the milling of one of the edges in prep for the correct size needed for the door side casing.  The third step is the cutting of the flutes in the stock of which requires the stock to be absolutely true  The final step is done with a router with a round nose bit held in a home made jig.  Hope I answered your question.

Nice job, however, why not use a Jointer?

James
