I finally got a chance to try my Kreg Jr. on a couple of 2x4 scraps. WOW!

It was EASY, FAST, and made a perfectly tight and straight joint!

I also tried one of the tampered plugs (not shown) and it fit perfect.

I am headed back to the shop to build three portable stands for my compound miter saw, router table and jig saw. I have a very small man cave shop so I need the portability because I do most of my work under the covered patio.

Thank you Kreg for an awesome product that even as a newbie to woodworking I can make clean, fast, tight joints. I'm already figuring out how I can convince my wife to add to my Kreg collection.

Gary,

Yes, pocket holes can be placed on the smaller side of 2X stock.

I'd locate one on each face, when both are accessable.

I have a question on the location of the screws as far as if they can be located on the (short  1-1/2") side of a 2"x 4".

I too am a newbie to all the Kreg Tools I just bought. I'm glad to hear that it's goin to be fun "and" easy with Kregs tools. I'm really gettin excited to make some new kitchen cabinets for my upstairs apartment! Thanks for the report on your first time with Kreg Tools.

Steve,

FYI

I made-up some sample test pieces, and got satisfactory results:

a.  pocket hole at 1" from edge on 2X (1-1/2") stock, and

b. pocket hole at 1/2" from edge on 1X (3/4") stock.

NOTE: When drilling pocket holes, set the stop collar, so the drill-bit tip is about 1/16" in, (thickness of a nickle), from breaking thru the far-side.

Steve,

In the photo shown, I'd relocate the screw on the RS, closer to the RS edge.

a.  remove screw

b.  drill pocket hole

c. install screw in new pocket hole

Steve,

1) That's correct.

2) A rule of thumb, I use---

locate the pocket hole near the edge, approx equal to the workpiece thickness.

i.e., for 2X stock (1-1/2" actual thickness) that would be 1-1/2"---

however, a min of 1" will suffice.

NOTE: a pocket hole TOO CLOSE to the edge, may fracture when tightening of the screw.

However, this is dependent on the grain structure in the workpiece.

If the screws are placed too close together, tortional twist will result in the workpiece fracturing,

hence the rational for spacing the screws further apart.

Ken, thanks for the tip. Let me see if I got this correct. Rather than putting both pocket holes side by side, as the jig is laid out, I should have put one 1" in and then slide the jig over for the second pocket, so each pocket is 1 " from the edge of the 2x4?

Steve,

Place the pocket holes about an inch from the edge.

Placing the pocket holes to close together, can result in the workpiece splitting, when excess tortional twist is applied.
