Great tool, that was used for large dowels (pegs) and tenons---
in timber framing.
I've never seen one before. I would guess that they would be great for Timber Framing and such.
...another barn beam auger drill
...for some serious boring---
large and "deep" holes.
Slow going but accurate and effective.
ie, accurate to standards years ago---when a 1/16" was close enought in barn building.
Phil,
You recognize this tool?
Thanks Ken. I did give some thought to getting an extention for the bit, but I already had the right size augur bit and since my drill press only has a 2 1/2" depth of cut I would have had to go to a hand-held drill-motor anyway, so I just went the way I did.
I don't have a hammer-drill, so I hadn't thought of using the hammer action to make things easier. Thanks for the idea for a new tool to add to my "Things I want for Xmas/B-Day/Other Occasion" List. LOL
I have to 'fess up though, the design came from Chis Schwarz book "Workbenches, from Design & Theory to Construction & Use". It's a great book that I can recomend highly.
BTW---nice looking bench design.
Phil,
There are Forsner bit extensions available---
they work great for drilling deep holes.
The extension is heavy-duty, and can be used in a HD hand drill, such as a Bosch Bull-Dawg drill, Milw HD drill, or the like.
When drilling into heavy timbers and thick materials, I use the "hammer-drill" mode.
The hammering action results in faster chip removal.
LOL. Yeah I came down one morning and there they were... (I wish).
Actually I had to drill each of those holes twice. The top is 4" thick and my 3/4" Forsner bit will only do about 2", so I did the first part on the drill press and then finished up with an old fashioned hand augur.
BTW, the whole bench is made from Home Depot 2x10 Construction Lumber (except the vise chops which are ash.)
Fantastic looking work bench, Phil!
I hate to tell you this but it looks like someone put a lot of holes in your top. I think there is a gang going around doing this, they are called "The Bench Dogs!". :)

Hi All.....I have the 35mm Kreg Jig hinge drill guide. The guide is great for 35mm Hinge Cups, but I have a speciality 40MM hinge cup to drill.Has anyone adapted the Kreg guide to work with 40mm Forsner drill bits? Or have a guide that works…Continue

I saw the video Kreg put out for this new jig and had high hopes for it.
I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.
First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…

Several months ago, I purchased the Kreg K4MS so that I could build the Lego Table as outlined on the companion "buildsomething" web site which exclusively uses pocket hole construction. I have considerable experience with conventional…
