I am building a gate that has 45 degree mitered 2x4 corners. I am trying to figure out if you can use the Kreg jig for this type of joint. The only example I can find with mitered joints if for a picture frame, and that would not work for a 2x4 since they place the pocket holes on the back side.

For this to work would you have to make pocket holes on the front and back a la the picture frame example, or could you make them on the inside or outside of the joint instead of the sides.

Can someone offer me examples of how to do this? All the gate examples I can find on the website have strait cuts.

thanks,

Todd

Well, if you have some 2x4 scraps then you can try different settings lower than the normal 1½" settings and use smaller screws till you find a combination that works.

If your jig has a portable base, then use the normal 1½" settings on the "sides" of the 2x4's and use 2½" screws.

Hi Todd, I'd put in 3 screws, two on the back and one in the middle on the front. The jig setting would stay at 1½ for them. You may have to play with the collar setting and screw length for the outside one.

Gate joints get a lot of stress so actually, I probably wouldn't use them at all, favoring half lap joints.

I've had pretty good luck making 45 degree joints on the inside of a piece, by drilling the pocket holes down the side of your 2x4. It is a butt joint with the piece with the holes on the inside, so that the screws go through to the other board's edge. It does take some practice with different angles, but any angle is stronger with a pocket hole screw, in my opinion.

Could you set up on the top outside edge with a larger setting and go through the 45 at about a 90? or even just try to hold steady and not use the jig just the stepped bit and go in at a 90 just stop before you get out of the board?

Kreg has a pretty good library of videos on Youtube...I saw one for joining different angles on there just the other day. Ya might have a look see. Just search for Kreg and then scroll down to it in their catalog of vids. Good luck! Oh and I highly recommend their Kreg clamps also...takes the guesswork out of a lot of the joinery securing part. ;)

HI TODD , I just bought the new kreg jig HD  , and the manual that comes with it shows you how to join 2x4,s at 45 degree angles, hope this helps ?

Where? I got the Skillbuilder DVD and quickstart guide and did not see it there - am I missing a manual?

I looked at this, it shows how to do mitered corners where the pocket holes are on the SIDE of the 2x4 (picture frame example), but not how to do them to have the pocket hole on the inside of the miter.  (e.g. if you had mitered corners and did not want any pocket holes showing on the side faces of the 2x4s)

In that case, you are probably better off going directly in from the outside edges, in both directions and counter sinking the screws. Don't worry about the angle, go in at 90°.
