I am rebuilding a bench and I need to consider a vice.  Space is an issue and I am lookig at the kreg vice system.  One, has anyone used this as a replacement for a regular vice? Two I am thinking about mounting one on a side and another on the end, any thoughts? Bench top is a reclaimed wooden solid core commercial grade door about 2/1/2 in thick.   Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  I do not have a wood vice now, so I can go either/or.

I have the vice.  I would not replace my wood vice with it.  I recommend still getting one good wood vice.

Installation is easy and it is very strong.  The vice works very well once you have it set up for the particular piece you intend to clamp.  However, It is a bit cumbersome to set the vice because the clamp head swivels so you need to use one thumb on the head to keep it flat to the piece while you tighten it with your other hand.  You have to use the little crank on the handle to set the width before clamping.  With that said I don't use it very much actually - its a good "extra" vice for certain uses for me.

Dave,

A good bench vise is a necessity---locate this vise near one end of your HD work bench.

Min 4'' wide jaws, swivel with lock.  The anvil feature is very useful.

Second, a wood workers vise---locate this item near the center of your workbench.

this item can be bolted to the bench top.

If space is limited or for portability, this clamp-on style is very handy.

It can be placed anywhere in a suitable location.

3rd---the Kreg vice system is a nice to have, but not necessary.  It has limitations.

For worktop---drilling, clamping and assy---this is my choice.

Kreg's clamp track---very useful in a wood workers shop.

Product

It can be fastened to a worktop.

This item is a very useful, for drilling, fastening, clamping and assembly of many woodworking projects.

Another useful alternate is the ''multi track'' offered by Rockler.
Similar to the Kreg's clamp track.

It can me mounted permanent to a sub-base, or affixed as needed for a specific task at hand.

I like it because it offers many uses.

Multi Track for Jigs...

When coupled to another multi-track, it comes in very handy for many assy applications.

Multi Track Brackets

Pick out what you need to start with, and expand as your needs arise.

I have a small shop and I need to be mobile, therefore, this all works best for me.
