Hi David, No I did not use book(s) I have been building cabinets over 20 years when starting my second career.  There are several good books out there that explains theory and practical building of cabinets.  I got my knowledge from years of practice beginning by looking at all the cabinets that are on the market and figuring out what works and does not work.  By looking at a cabinet and studying how it is made try to figure how you would build it and ways to change it and make it better.  I did gleam many books and magazines in my earlier years gaining much information.  To be honest most of my working knowledge came from what I saw in cabinet shops and cabinet outlets.  My books are currently in storage but I will sort though them and send you the names of the best books.

You will notice that most of the cabinets in the big box stores are all build the same way using the same method of using staples and nails and some glue.  Most of the jointery is simple butt joints and leave much to be desired as far as accuracy and strength.  The difference in them is the names they label them with and the look they give them by changing the style of the face frames.  They will all be a common size and they fill up a customers house with these and make up the difference in the remaining space using filler strips.

Your first step in building a custom cabinet is to build the cabinets that actually fit the space you have. The second step is material selection and  cutting accuracy of your material.  The third step is improving the jointery of the nailing and stapeling method by using the kreg jig and glue.

Yes I used cabinet grade plywood for the boxes and 13/16 Inch red oak lumber for the face frames and doors.

I will be building the drawers from a 1/2 " 11 ply popular plywood and the jontery will be dove tail.

I build all my cabinets without nails or staples and use only screws and glue.  In these cabinets  I used raw materials and do the finish myself.

Don't forget you are a member of one of the best sources available.  There are numerous ladies and guy whom build out outstanding cabinets and will gladly share knowledge with you.  If you have questions of me please feel free to ask me.

I'm looking forward to seeing your cabinets on here and watching your woodworking abilities grow.

Did you use any good cabinet books for your project? I'm looking to build shop cabinets as practice for kitchen cabinets and have been trying to find a good reference book.  Looks great by the way. Did you use all plywood for the boxes? Prefinished or did you finish yourself?
