Bill,

Alder is on the lighter and softer end of the scale when it comes to hardwoods.  It works and finishes similar to Pine.  However, the chest still has some weight to it, since it is constructed from solid glued up 3/4" panels.  I was initially going to line the interior with Cedar planks like the oak blanket chest I built years ago, but they didn't want cedar lining.  Let me search my computer, I think I still have the plans I drew up.  If so I could post them and put together a mini-tutorial of how I built this project.

That is beautiful.  And looks very useful.  Wondering about weight.  Is it heavy?  Are boards 3/4"?   Is Alder a dense / heavy wood or fairly light (I could look that up but figured you could comment for all to learn)?   We could use some extra storage for blankets etc and this looks like a great way to do so.  Thanks for sharing
