I got a Kreg Jig for my birthday this past weekend.  Although I am excited, I am scared to start using it.  I want to make a book shelf as my first project.  Am I being too ambitious?

I think that a book shelf would be a very nice first project. There are many benefits to using the Kreg system. The biggest is probably that you don't need to use clamps after placing the screws. I would put the glue on the joints as you normally would and place some of the Kreg clamps to stabilize it as you place the screws. After they are in place, no clamps are needed. Have fun with your new jig!

Hi Amelia. There is really no such thing as "too ambitious," especially when you're just getting started building with Kreg Joinery! We offer a couple free project plans on our website that walk you through the steps of building a simple bookshelf, a great project for beginners. You can download the free plans here: https://www.kregtool.com/get-inspired/Plans.aspx?source=1677. Please note that in order to download the plans, you will first need to create a kregtool.com account or log in if you already have one.

hi.   just grab your jig and instructions.  be sure and read the instructions that came with your jig.  the only problems you might run into will be not getting the drill bit set right for the thickness of the wood being used. second make sure the pieces you are joining are clamped securely in place. if not they will move when you screw the boards together.  when these two problems are taken care of you will find the kreg jig is a joy to use.HAPPY WOODWORKING  most of all have fun.

Amelia,

Have no fear.

You will do fine.

I too was a bit nervous when I started out.

I practiced on a scrap piece of wood first.

After that I was ready to tackle my bench project.

you got a great birthday present! don't be scared to use the Kreg Jig.

The best thing about working with wood is if you make a mistake, you CAN start over with another piece of wood.

Learn from your mistakes.

My first project was a shelf as well. It was a fun and challenging build for a newbee such as myself. it gave me the confidence to move on to some toy bulk bins I'm currently working on. It's a great learning experience. Take your time. Have fun!
