Kreg Owners' Community

Am about to assemble some cope and stick cabinet doors. The carcass is assembled with Kreg screws, but I hesitate to do the same with the doors. I am thinking of just using glue to assemble them, avoiding the plugs. What are the opinions of other Kreg users? This is the first cabinet that I have made from the ground up, the other one the doors were already made.

Hi Jim,  The cope and stick door is a well made method of joinery and more that enough to hold a door frame using a good wood glue such as "Titebond".  The use of a kreg pocket hole bored into the rails actually will destroy some of the cope and stick joinery.   I have been making doors using the cope and stick for about 27 years now and never had problems with this method.   The secret is correct measurements and assembly method.  I use "Titebond" glue and a 1/2" headless pin in the joint to hold the joint tight until the glue sets.

If the inter panel is a solid wood panel make sure it is fitted correctly allowing it room to expand and move during climate changes.  I cut the panel 1/4 shorter than the rail and then insert rubber spacers into the groove to keep the panel tight but allow it to move with climate changes.  It also absorbs a lot of the force that is made on a door from opening and closing and especially when it get slammed.   You can get by with having a tight fitting plywood panel but anything that is a solid wood it has to float or the door will come apart even if it is kreg screwed.

If interested I have a slide show on my photo/projects page showing the building of cabinet doors.  There should be a link posted there.

Jay, have tried to locate both the slide show on doors as well as the articles that you have referred to on another posting with out any luck on search. I am not familiar enough with the forum to locate them I guess. Would you please provide links?

Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim I will find them and make sure you get them.  The site has had a lot of things move around and some I have looked for are no longer there.  I do have anothe source of where I have save them if I can not find them..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLcSp6JkSME&feature=youtu.be  I have the one on building doors stored on your tube,  you can find the link on my projects on the kreg community.

Hi Jim, I did some research on the Kreg Community and to aid you further during your adventures here the best way to find something is to use the "search window:" in the top right hand corner of the front page.  Type in a subject and or a person's name and enter search.  In this case I typed in "building doors"  it returned with many articles on doors of which page two and three contain some of my posts.

I know that the topic of which you will at one time or another need to use is on door hinges and especially the European style.  You can find this using the same manner by typing in "European hinges"   I have many other articles on subjects like wood splitting, selecting wood, building face frames, and several topics on building cabinets.  You can also contact me in person if you need any help and I will help you in anyway that I can.  Have a super and safe day in he shop.

Thanks, guess I just didn't use the correct search words!! Spent the day sanding, more of the same tomorrow.
