Hi Joe;

I not sure what portable base you are asking about but most marking on the bases are for the thickness of the wood to set the base the right distance from the joint, to set the depth or stop collar on your drill is done with a different guide sometimes in the case like on the R3 jig.

Hope this helps you maybe someone else can help more.

Hi Ray,

I am talking about the K3 which has a poratble base with a lip on the end of it that hangs over the end the piece being drilled. The drill block slides into it. On the side of the portable base are lines with markings at 1/2, 3/4 , etc.

I know   how to use the drill block by itself because I've use the little single hole ones before,   but I don't see any explanation how to set it if it is inserted in the portable base.

Thank you for your interest and help with my question.

Joe

Hello Joe,

Here is a Kreg Joinery Quick-Start Guide with complete instructions on proper setup and use: http://www.kregtool.com/prodimages/kregjigquickstarguide_0.pdf.

For the strongest joint possible, you need to properly position the location of your pocket holes according to your material thickness. To do this, start with your K3 Drill Guide situated in your Portable Base. Then, raise or lower the Drill Guide's height using the positioning pin on your Portable Base. Simply loosen the pin and raise the Drill Guide until the correct mark is showing just above the jig body, and then re-tighten the pin. The correct mark is based on the thickness of material you are working with. See an example below set for 3/4" material:

Have a great day!

Thanks, now why couldn't i find that in my book? It just said see online for proper use instructions. The instructions you sent explain it. Just one more question though. What do the marks on the side of the portable base itself represent ?

Joe, the markings on the portable base itself are what you use to set your depth collar. So, for example, if you are working with 3/4"-thick wood, set your depth collar by aligning it with the 3/4" marking and then tightening the stop collar with the included Allen wrench.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. I just examined the instructions that comes with the Portable Base and you are right; there are no instructions on what its markings are for. We will update the instructions soon.

Thanks again!

FYI, as of May, 2016 your instructions still have no information as to how to use the marks found on the portable base. I am unclear from this thread how to use them, and after speaking with one of your representatives, I still don't know. Maybe I am not smart enough for this tool.

Dear Joe,

The markings you are referring to on the Portable Base allow you to set your depth collars setting.  Set the drill guide block at your correct setting in the portable base, for instance say you have it at the 3/4" mark like the picture posted by KregRep shows.

Loosen the depth collar on your drill bit and slide the drill bit through one of the holes on the drill guide block.  Just like you do when you setting the depth collar on your jig base, match up the step of the drill bit with the 3/4" line you are referring to on the portable base and tighten the depth collar against the drill guide block.  Since you have the K3 bench top base you can double check and see that your drill bit will now be set for 3/4" settings.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion on these markings.  If not please send me a message with your contact information and I can try to explain it better.
