Lousy Bits

I have two screw driver bits.  One I got with my Kreg Jr and the head is too small for the screws. It constantly slips and rounds out the head  The other I got with the K5 and it is warped.  I ended up buying some replacements(not Kreg) at our local hardware store and they work perfect.  Has anybody else had problems with their bits or did I just get unlucky?

I have the Kreg K4MS Jig Master System.  I'm currently working on a table top made from 2 x 4's, and 2 x 6's.  I had 360 holes to drill for the top so I bought the Kreg Jig R3 Pocket Hole System at Home Depot for my son to use to help me.  The tip of the bit rounded out after about 30 screws while the bit from the K4 managed to finish all the driving we needed done.  The jig itself does not have the same all metal shaft for the drill guide as the K4 Jig does, and consistently left a lot more blowout at the sides after a hole is drilled.  We traded off using the K4 and K3 to see if it was operator error, and it was not.  I would advise against buying this unit until the quality improves.  I, for one, am returning the R3 to Depot.

Screws with dual-driver bit heads---

square and cross-point.

The "square" tip end on the driver bit, needs to be in full contact with the screw head, on all four sides in the recess of the screw head.

If the bit is tilted to the side, which is not in alignment with the screw, the driver bit is not seated engaged, and can result in the screw head becoming deformed.

Examine the screw head and the driver bit, under a magnifier, to get a better visual.

The insert the driver tip into the screw head, and observe that all four sides of the driver bit is in intimate contact with the recess in the screw head.

Never had a problem with the Robertson bits.

They should have a slight taper on the square section to ensure correct mate up.

I would be tempted to return the Kreg bit and have it investigated for a possible warranty replacement.

There was some thought to producing a hybrid screw with philips head embedded within maybe these are the screws you have and its not the driver bit at fault.

My thoughts on this idea of modifying the head would be to discontinue using the tool.

Its a great jig, it works well, and the screws are excellent, so you know the saying!!
