I like the "lightening holes."  They make the project look a lot more exotic than it really is.  I actually love the fact that you used a piece of scrap - I can't throw any piece of material away.

The purpose for the holes was just to reduce weight - I only had scrap mdf laying around - I think 1/2" plywood would have been ideal

Was curios myself about the holes - unless it's just an overall weight reducer.
