This was an old yard sale work table I found. The original work surface was severely water damaged. I built the new top from two layers of 3/4" particle board I had sitting around, then edged it in 3/4"x1/5" pine... also scraps from another project. The edge banding is held on by hidden pocket screws (drilled into the top layer of particle board). A nice, sturdy, portable (folding) work table to clamp my Kreg jig onto! I'll be adding a bench Klamp soon.

interesting addition, I must have about 3 or 4 of those kicking around the shop (Kijiji $15 specials you just can't resist!). How did you attach the top to the unit? I was thinking of something similiar, however I was going to try and utilize the "bolts" that are attached to the pre-existing boards so it would lock in place.

Great set up. I did a similar top for my workmate.

I had been contemplating where to make a permanent home for my KJ. I think you just gave me the inspiration I was looking for. :)

I've got a workmate just like that. Must be 30 years old. Great idea. I'm gonna do the same thing to mine.
I may add a few things. My whole shop is portable. This ought to work right in.

I hanve plans drawn up to make a new top for my workmate as well. I plan to make my top larger and add extentions to it as well. In my plans, I have layed out 4 bench klamp plates and also a couple t-tracks. Will post picks when complete. Yours looks nice. Sounds as though it must work well for you.

Kevin, sounds a lot like mine... since that picture was taken, I have added two Bench Klamps, and I love them! I used the 'new' Workmate bench to make the stand for my 12 bottle wine cooler last weekend. I'll have pics of it up soon... just need to finish painting it. That's my project for today.

the original clamping sections on my workmate are pretty well shot as well. I doubled up a couple of pcs of 2' x 4' melamine, and built a 2" tall frame underneath it so that it would rest on top of the old workmate top. I then picked up the Kreg bench clamp and an extra plate. I routed out for them and attached them to my top. I also built a small box that fits down into that space at the bottom of the workmate to hold various small layout type tools. Never throw away a Workmate!

Nice work. I'm going to do the same to my old Workmate.
