Excellent build on the planter. Last spring, I found myself building planters, raised and tall, for family and friends. With each one built, I learned something new to improve my process, so i can relate to your learning experience.
(BAD PUN WARNING ---->>) I guess building planters, in a way, helps us to.....ahem....grow. hehehe, sorry couldn't resist.

Thank you. It turned out okay, I think. I did learn a lot from this project, the need for a liner or something to aid in drainage. For future planters ill be drilling in a grid of holes in the base followed by some river rock covered in filter cloth. This way on those heavy rain days I don't have to watch my soil wash over the edge. This problem isn't as bad now that I have quite a bit of vegetation growing in it in addition to adding more holes to the bottom.

Hope this helps.

Michael,

Nice boxes, did you line them with anything (plastic) before you put the dirt in?

Thanks Leslee.  I can't agree more; very easy on the back and it keeps most critters out as well.  I didn't put a finish on the wood at all.  There was some concern amongst the chiefs in my house about chemicals from any treatments possibly contaminating the veggies we hope to grow in it.

I made 4 raised planter boxes about two summers ago out of reclaimed wood from an old house that was torn down. I do like your box Micheal, it reminds me of my 4 boxes that I made to hold my garden in. I like the raised bed because it is easier on the back. I hope you are going to put a finish or a wood protector on the outside of your box from discoloration.

Don't have any tips for you as this was my first experience using cedar. I know the cedar boards I used were really soft and easy to work with. Drilling the, was a breeze as well. Check the depth on your drill collar and make sure your using the proper length screw. I used coarse screws, since cedar is a softwood and I needed the holding power but if the screw is the culprit you could probably get away with fine thread screws.

Any tips for working with cedar? i am planning on building a cedar bed, chest and dresser using pocket hole joinery. i have been playing with some of my cedar boards and am splitting out the cedar when installing my pocket screws. any suggestions?

Thanks Jim, we have tons of pallets sitting around at work.  I'll have to give that a try.

Don, sorry but I don't have plans for this.  It was super easy to make though.  Just a box with no top on it.  Afterwards I simply framed in each side and extended the stiles to become the legs.  I ended up extending pocket holes all the way down the legs because I was concerned about the weight of the box with wet dirt in it.  It measures roughly 32" x 32" square.  I have plans to make two more like it but varying in height.

I really like the planter, are there plans for it?

I purchased one today and am very disappointed with it.

First the docking station is extremely cheap. The plastic is pathetic. A Lego has more…
