Ray I use a product called friction polish to finish my pens .Place on a piece of kitchen paper and apply too the pen all the time spinning the lathe faster .Gives a nice glossy shine .Also some people use superglue as a finish coat ,same technique as the friction polish .But you got to be really quick .Also have used a car product called t cut a liquid colour restorer used in conjunction with wet and dry sandpaper slightly abrasive.Hope these tips help ray.

Joseph to get a smooth angd glossy finish I use a kit that consists of 3 sanding pads, each side of the pads has a different grit on it they are also color coded so you know witch pad is what grit. you use a little bit of water with them. I start out sanding them with 150 grit paper and the go to 220 grit. The pads start out at  600grit then 800-1500- 2400-4000- and you finally finish up with a 12000 grit pad. You really don't notice much of a difference until you get up to the 2400 grit pad, but you can tell it's workiing because as you are sanding them you start to see a slurry begin to build up that has to be wiped off before moving on to the next pad. I don't use any kind of polish on them at all.

Micheal, I'll have to look into it, I never even heard of it. can you use regular carbide tipped tools or do you need something else?

Ray sometimes takes me a hour or more too get a good finish on a acrylic pen.So when I sell them I only just cover my costs.Ray you ever turned a material called corrin .Its a crushed seashell binded together with a resin ,its used in expensive worktops /countertops.Its amazing stuff easy too work with and when finished looks like marble .Available on e -bay .

Thanks Guys, and Micheal you are right, this pen was made from 2 acrylic blanks that were cut and glued together also there is alot more steps to getting a smooth finish when working with acrylic. Yes David it was made on my new lathe, the one thing I like about turning pens is the amount of time you invest in it before you have a finished project.
