Very nice addition to a house with avid readers. Also a quick note to (trentalange). Kreg Tool has come out with a fantastic new product to help with your crown moulding. Check it out on their website!

Fasten blocks right to the top of the cabinet and the back of the crown (after the crown is installed), but I still wouldn't block behind the corners. A piece of lumber can actually pull the corner apart if it moves. Instead rely on a high quality glue and stitch the corner together with 23ga pins.

OK That other pic clears things up, that is how I am going to proceed. I said it before, but those two pieces are unbeleiveable.

In regards to the crown moulding, I have done some of it attaching to ceilings but not the top of furniture. It just looks like it would not be too secure unless there is some trick or something I can't see. You are nailing the bottom to the unit but unlike on a ceiling you have nothing to nail the top to as it is open to the air. I guess it is really important to have a secure corner.

Tanks for the quick response

I have uploaded another picture of the cabinet for you. If you just treat it like a countertop you won't have any problems. Attach the countertop to the top cabinet, and it'll hide any discrepancies between upper and lower. I banded mine with 1-3/4"x7/8" maple, it gave me a 1" lip.

Crown isn't as hard as you might think. You have to know whether you are using 38 or 45 degree crown, and cut accordingly. The angles are readily available online. I would suggest buying cheap MDF crown and practice LOTS before attacking your project.

Beautiful piece: Could you put a close up pic of the transition between the lower and upper piece? I am trying to design something similar and can't figure that out and yours looks great, particularly the left side of the unit where you have the lower and upper piece connect. Also I am trying to learn how to do the crown moulding on the top any web sites that show that? Thanks

I"m looking to build two bookshelves next to my fireplace and looking to get some ideas in the Kreg community. I just wanted to comment on how good your bookshelf came out. (5 STARS)

You should make a video of how you built it. Because now I want to make one

Thanks Jim and Al, the cabinet breaks down into 2 pieces. The ledge between the upper and lower cabinet is actually fastened to the upper cabinet and is carefully matched maple plywood. There is a joint in it, but was carefully matched and is almost invisible. The entire cabinet is sprayed with Flecto Diamond Semi-Gloss Latex Polyurethane. All the face frames are 7/8" and 1-1/4" maple... it's a heavy unit!
