Tony I actually worked for a company that produced high end and custom panel and murphy beds..and I was the one who made 95% of them over a 6 year period.I use my bed daily..the struts or cylinders have not failed me or even faltered on me yet..and ive used it everyday for over 5 years now.as for the issues you have with the spacers and latches i cant help you because we only used the mechanisms..and free formed the rest of the bed around it so the whole design was different than the hide a bed stock plans..have a look at my page..i have the one i personally sleep in every night posted there..

Do you work for Create-a bed or one of the other manufacturers? Some of them are sure nice How long do the cylinders last. I take it that it is not important to have latches in the foot of the bed set in tight as the bed itself holds it in mostly. I put 1/4" spacers there anyway so the bottom of the bed fits flush to the frame. Fussy perfectionist millwright that I am. How wide is that board dear? Let's see, hmmmm, its .7515".

I am very familiar with this mechanism..i've literally built over 1000 of these beds in the past 7 years..
