Garage Sports Toy Shelves

We needed to re-organize a bit and optimize space for a particular set of gear. While this box could probably work for a lot of different applications, we made it specifically for a couple sets of golf clubs, roller blades and some SCUBA gear with room on the top to put something else.

Used 3/4 ply and Kreg Jig w/Coarse screws. Cheated a bit and used an air compressor / brad nailer to tack up some boards first before tightening things up with the Kreg screws. Didn't bother with glue. Didn't seem necessary. Also used the Kreg shelf pin jig to line up the holes on the right side divider and far right side panel so we could adjust shelving if desired. The top shelf is permanent with screws though.

That's a sturdy and functional build. Like the wheels, make it more convenient to move around. Great for organization and one can never get enough storage. Great job!

That is nice that you have the Kreg shelf pin jig.  I just finished a cabinet that I made for my spare room for all of the boxes for my Christmas Village.  I probably have over 75 of them.  I wanted to make adjustable shelves and I don't have a shelf pin jig.  I had a center divider that had holes that went all of the way thru so you could use it from both sides.  I put it next to the right side of the cabinet and drilled thru the holes to get the placement and did the same thing on the left side.  It worked out great!  I didn't have to do any measuring!! LOL  I have also heard that you could use pegboard and just mark the holes you are using.  I don't think it is a big deal about the horizontal holes as long as they are close enough to distribute the weight.  I could be wrong. Like you said, you don't see them.  Good thinking about getting it off the ground.  You never know!!!  Good job! :)

Thanks. While our garage is fairly dry, I didn't want to risk ruining wood via water rot, so while I considered skids or weathershield wood, I figured rubber wheels would put it up a bit and protect from water as well as allow moving for re-org or cleaning.

For the shelf pins, the Kreg jig worked nicely. Even if they're offset a horizontally a bit. That is... the side panels are attached with the rear part flush with the back panel. But the internal dividers obviously just butt up against the back panel. So that means the shelf pin holes are across from each other, but not exactly, there's maybe the 3/4" difference between them. Why did I do this? Well, what really matters is that the pins align vertically. Horizontally I figured a small offset was no big deal and it's just a lot easier to hold the thing against the edge rather then measure in. You can't see it and the shelves are perfectly fine.

Hi Scott - great job on your cabinet.  I like that you put it on wheels and can move it around if necessary!  I Love wheels in the garage!  that is a nice touch drilling the holes so that you can adjust the shelving as needed.  Good idea!  Keep up the good work! :)
