Entryway Bench

This is an entryway bench that I found on Anna White's website. I modified the plans a little bit. I built one last year when I first started doing the wood working hobby from pine I bought at Home Depot. This one is made from rough oak that I bought from a local sawmill. I used my new Dewalt 734 planer to plane it down. Interestingly the cost was about the same for both. I put some danish oil on it and I plan on applying some rub on poly this weekend. Yeah the basement is very cluttered and messy :) The project itself is pretty easy. I think the hardest part was gluing up the wood to make it 12 inches since the boards were only 8 inches wide. That was very time consuming. I am not good at gluing up either so it was good practice.

Thank you Jason. I live in central PA and the sawmill I go to is just a local guy that does it as a hobby. Its pretty cheap for walnut, oak, and cherry and whatever else he happens to have at the time at $1.50 a board foot plus if you bring you own logs he will saw them for .34 cents a board foot. I may try one of these in walnut and cherry. This one is for my mother for mothers day. My wife also wants another one made of oak just like this one. I guess I have a lot of work to do. Wood working is way more fun than actually being at work though. :)

Great job! I am building the same thing for a client, but I decided to give dado's a try. I wish I could find a local sawmill that is open on saturdays! She wants it painted white so I went with pine.
